Having small dogs at home, especially if they’re non-shedding small dogs, makes life so much easier than when you live with big beasts. And while we love, love, love big beasts, it’s pretty much a universal truth that it’s simpler to accommodate small dogs. They’re easier on the furniture and floors. They just are. But, it’s also true that small dogs at home require stuff. And this, my friends, is some of our favorite stuff.

Comfort and Safety
We love these steps for small dogs so much we devoted an entire blog post to singing their praises. They saved our sleep, and how can you not love that? The environmentally-friendly stairs protect small dogs at home, who sometimes can’t or shouldn’t be jumping up and down from the furniture.
We’ve placed three of these reversible, handwoven cotton rugs strategically at the doors to catch paw debris before it makes its way through the rest of our home. We pop all three rugs in the wash every week, and they still look amazing.
If you’ve got a small dog at home, you know about Zoomies, those crazy spurts of wild energy that inspire your otherwise normal pup to tear through your house or yard at breakneck speed. But with anything physical, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Our pups were sending our area rugs flying, even with a rug pad underneath. Sometimes, the girls would slide so violently, they’d crash into walls. We now use these to keep our rugs in place and the pups safe.
No small dog home should be without this incredibly versatile pen, which also can serve as a ginormous gate. It’s perfect for puppies, of course, when paired with a small crate to fit inside to make house-training much easier. But, we use ours as much now to keep the dogs safe when we have potentially careless visitors coming in and out of the house. We don’t have to stress that someone might have left a door open or forgotten to secure the outdoor gate. When we travel by car, the pen serves to corral the pups outdoors if we’re busy and can’t have them underfoot.
Fresh Air and Clean Clothes
On the East Coast, winters can become positively desert-like. The pups’ hair stands on end with static electricity and their skin becomes as dry as ours. To help, we swear by this perfect little humidifier. As an added bonus, it works as an essential oil diffuser year-round.
We love anything lavender and everything Mrs. Meyer*s. This cruelty-free, bio-degradable, plant-based detergent is perfect for the entire family’s laundry, including the pups’ bedding and toys.
Do you see a trend here? We throw one of these lavender and 95% plant-based dryer sheets in with our organic wool dryer balls (when we can find them…the pups use them as toys too) for static-free laundry straight from the dryer.
